Ethics in design

Ethics in design Basically, ethics can be defined as the branch of philosophy that deals with the moral principles of a person with respect to the appropriateness and wrongness of particular measures and to the goodness and badness of the intentions and ends of such measures. These rules of conduct are usually acknowledged in respect to a particular class, group, culture, organization or profession.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics in design specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Every profession as well as organization usually has its own fixed ethical principles which are typically in regard to the mode of operation, the effects of the products or services offered and in the association with clients and stakeholders. Ethics in the workplace of any profession helps in ensuring that a strong moral compass is maintained when there is conflict and confusion in times of crisis.[1] As in other professions, maintenance of professional eth ics is required in the design profession. Professional ethics are referred to as the ethical issues that usually come up because of the proficient knowledge that the professional have achieved and the ways in which this knowledge should be administered during the provision of the specific service to consumers. Since the professional has obtained more superior instruction in a specific field as compared to the average people, he/she is competent in making and operating on informed information and thus is seen to carry extra moral responsibilities.[2] A person with this kind of added and superior knowledge is more often than not, accorded more authority and power and the clients often place their confidence on the professional with the belief that the services provided to them will either be of assistance to them or bring profits. It is therefore relatively possible for a professional to misuse the authority he/she has and take advantage of the clients’ lack of understanding. T o avert such client exploitation as well as safeguard the integrity of the profession, there are codes of practice, which all specialists must follow, enforced in nearly all professions.[3] Generally, there are fundamental principles which constitute the basic make up of a principal. The first principle in the ethical practices of design is founded on the client’s needs and states that any and every action should be first and foremost, client centered. Every designer should make sure that their practice places the customer’s interests before their own.Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? Let's see if we can help you! In relation to this, a designer is expected to avoid working simultaneously on assignments that are bound to create a conflict of interest without the consent of the clients concerned. The only exemption is in the case where there is a principle in that trade for a designer to work at the same time for several competitors.[4] Another basic principle is founded on equality and diversity. Every professional, while practicing should ensure that he/she is promoting as well as demonstrating a commitment to equality and diversity. A designer should ensure that he/she is maximizing the life chances of all the service or products consumers.[5] Therefore a designer should not in any chance, refuse to offer services to a client based on any kind of discrimination of race, tribe, gender, nationality, religion or social and educational status. Conversely, a professional designer should be underpinned by an obligation to encourage diversity and equal opportunity for all people and wherever there is an opportunity, to rectify the impact of educational and social drawbacks.[6] Impartiality is another elementary principle in ethical practices of most professionals including in design. This principle states that a professional, designer or otherwise, must make sure that the delivery of any information, recommendation or guidance services should be duly unbiased. In order to attain this therefore, a designer is expected to make clear anything that limits or creates a barrier to their professional knowledge or other things that are in the framework in which they function that may lead to bias or favoritism. A designer should give a client full and sufficient information about the range of options that are available so that the client has a chance to make a definite and knowledgeable decision. Any design organization should also make its stance on impartiality clear while creating its code of ethics so as to avoid any misconceptions, as well as indicate any constrictions that may limit the variety of options they put before service users.[ 7] In addition, there is the principle of confidentiality which is paramount in any codes of ethics of any profession. In this case, the client’s confidentiality is put at the forefront and should be treated essentially with respect. A design professional should make a clear commitment of their intent on confidentiality and should inform their clients at the earliest time possible on anything that may cause limitation to confidentiality. herefore, every designer is expected to treat any work pertaining to a client with confidentiality and should avoid divulging any of the information in any manner. In this case, that would include the work that is presently in progress preceding the completion of a project as well as any knowledge of the intentions of a client, and details in relation to the work. A professional designer should also make sure that other staff members act accordingly and uphold discretion in their work.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics in design specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It should also be made apparent to everyone in the personnel staff that the delivery of a service should be done with respect for the privacy of the client and disclosing any information should only be done with informed consent with the exception of situations that create serious risk to the welfare of the individual or other people involved.[8] However, even with these basic principles put in place, there is a need to instill them in the minds of the professionals and staff members in a working environment. Clearly outlining the principles does not necessary guarantee that the employees will follow them as required and thus the need for an ethics implementation program. Presence of an implementation program ensures that the involved members are inspired to put the ethical principles into use and generally reflects on the professions integrity, character and beliefs. First and foremost, it is important to make sure that the principal body appointed to create the code of ethics has a genuine commitment to the ethics initiative and is willing to devote enough financial resources in the development and maintenance of the program.[9] This way, there will be no slacking in its implementation and progression due to lack of resources. It is also important to assign a single senior supervisor to concentrate only on the implementation of this program. He should be able to visit all organizations whose work entails design and revise and record on the implementation of the code of ethics. He should then keep records, do follow ups and most importantly report directly to the chairman of the program board on the day-to-day aspects of the program.[10] An independent assessment of the current ethical climate in the profession should also be done through interviews, focus groups and anonymous written surveys. This will make it possible to compare the existing codes to those of the up to date and well working programs used in other professions and accordingly make alterations where needed. It would also be encouraging to professionals to create an open ended helpline in which designers can seek for guidance and direction in relation to the ethics principles. This should also include a reporting system whereby individuals can present ethical concerns or violation reports. Publicizing the ethics program throughout the profession and encouraging organizations to adopt it would go a long way in its implementation. In addition, the ethics program board should make a point of reviewing the agenda and principles at least one or twice a year.[11] Bibliography Brenner, Steven N, Ethics Programs and Their Dimensions. Tougher laws and punishments for child molesters Research Paper

Tougher laws and punishments for child molesters - Research Paper Example Even these violent sex offenders have the right to request for their notification process to be blocked. They can change addresses without the community or the police being notified of such move. The Adams Walsh Act, signed by President George W. Bush, is Ohio’s current sex offender registry law. The law took effect on January 2008, and it allows Tier III sex offenders to request for a local judge to waive their notification process upon proving that the sex offender is no longer a threat to the community. The sex offender will still be listed as a sexual predator and be required to provide an updated address every 90 days to the local sheriff’s office. Lawmakers intended for the notification process waiver for sex offenders convicted of crimes to apply to offenders who did not commit another crime before the new law applied. However, in July 2008, Stephen James McConville from Lorain County was convicted of rape and gross sexual imposition. He pleaded guilty and was co nvicted under the new law. He was listed as a sexual offender under the Tier III offender level. After the conviction, McConville requested for the judge to waive the notification of his address to the community. The judge in Lorain County agreed based on McConville clearing the law’s 11 step criteria. ... According to the article, â€Å"The state was arguing anyone convicted after Jan. 1, 2008 was mandatorily and automatically subjected to notification and not subject to waiver. But the actual statute written by the legislature does not say that,† said McConville's attorney, John M. Prusak. â€Å"What the state was arguing is not in statute.† (Fields, n. pag.). The case was presented to the Supreme Court where there was a 7-0 ruling. The Supreme Court sided with the lower court and appeals court. The ruling was based on the court’s opinion on the strict reading of the law based on the legislator’s writing of the law. The ruling was based on the following argument, â€Å"The state's argument is not persuasive,† Justice Robert Cupp wrote for the court. â€Å"The language used in the statute pertains to those sexual offenders whose status is determined after the effective date" of the law.† (Fields, n. pag.). The case was argued for the State of Ohio by the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office. There was an attempt to reach the Assistant Prosecutor Billie Joe Belcher regarding the case, but he could not be reached. Cleveland Democrat, State Senator Shirley Smith introduced a bill to repeal the provision in the law that allows for sex offenders to have their notification process waived. Senator Smith’s decision to introduce a bill to repeal the provision was motivated by the case of Anthony Sowell. Sowell is an accused serial killer who is listed as a Tier III sexual predator. He would have been eligible to request for the judge to waive his notification process upon relocating from his Imperial Avenue home. Sex Offender Registration Laws In the case of Anthony Sowell vs. the State of Ohio, Anthony Sowell appeared in court, facing allegations of killing eleven women

Human Computer Interaction for Commercial Applications Essay

Human Computer Interaction for Commercial Applications - Essay Example The super-sensitivity of the touch proves a real mess for the users to handle the phone properly. The white box in the diagram shows the problematic, extra sensitive screen Whether it is being used or not, it automatically initiates different functions that are accessible from the external touch screen display with just mere friction, making it difficult for the users to receive important calls and messages. Environment Surrounding the System The device MotoRazr2 is basically a mobile phone made for communication. It is a common mobile phone used primarily in the United States of America. It contains basic functionalities such as calls, messages, video streaming, Internet, Bluetooth, camera and external memory. It is used by common people who are average mobile users and use their mobile phones just for making calls, sending messages and for some entertainment. Therefore, it is used socially by an average person who does not have a keen interest in utilizing all the functionalities o f the mobile phone. Therefore, these mobiles are used roughly by users and such rough usage causes the UI design with the flaw of extra sensitivity to fail completely. The external display touch system that was the USP of this mobile phone proves to be a stone in the path of success. Jargons No technical jargons are used in the system literature except for common HCI terminologies in describing the system PART 2: THE USERS List of User Groups Following are the potential users of the device/mobile MotoRazr2: 1. Lower class businessmen 2. Students 3. Freelancers 4. Salary based personnel Characteristics of Two Contrasting Groups The two highly contrasting groups that have a significant level of distinct priorities are lower class businessmen and students. These lower class businessmen have more office work to do than to enjoy entertainment functionalities of the mobile phone in question. However, the user group of students has considerably significant usage of the entertainment facili ties of MotoRazr2. The characteristics of a lower class businessmen group are as follows: These businessmen do not have enough time to explore the functionalities of the device Due to lack of time, they have comparatively lesser interaction with the device They are careless about their device and therefore, have a disadvantage of extra sensitive touch display The characteristics of the user group of students are as follows: Students have relatively more free time than these businessmen, hence they explore the functionalities of the device thoroughly Because of their rough usage of device and frequent interaction with it, students have faced problems such as auto triggering of unwanted behavior because of the poor UI design PERSONAS Businessmen Group: John is a new technology entrepreneur. He runs a small technology startup and deals in web designing and development. He normally takes projects from his local clients; therefore, he is mostly discussing his projects on call. He barely has time to text anyone and he needs to save contact details on the go. John normally loads his cell phone with credit, but his daughter, who is a toddler, is greatly fascinated by the external display of the phone. She always uses her thumb to turn its light on and off. She also likes to play with the flap and press random key combinations. John is always amazed by the fact that his credits run out at night time. John cannot, therefore, make important calls at night as he does not have enough credit

Analytical Evaluation of Freud Essay -- essays research papers

Based on the past information and the information I acquired during the duration of this course I chose to do my evaluation on Erik Erikson using the classical psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and Carl Rogers using the non-Freudian / interpersonal approach from Adler and Jung. Since there is no way to tell if either theory is right or wrong it is imperative that we discover our own theory among the popular ones and derive our own method of practice based on our current knowledge. This is done by comparing and evaluating each psychologist and their own theories to derive a common ground among each of them. In response to Erik Erikson and his approach on ego psychology he was an insecure child growing up who had problems with identity confusion. According to Freud and the classical psychoanalysis, this could possibly be a reflection of his Oedipus complex in where he can not identify with his father nor can he get close to his mother. Since he is dealing with his own confusion of his own identity he can no longer have feelings of closeness with either parent causing him to feel abandoned. His father abandoned him at an early age and so he never had that feeling of closeness with his father. Being as though he did not have that male role during his growing up he can not feel that sense of love coming from either parent which caused him to come up with the ego identity model in his own practices. Freud didn't exactly invent the idea of the conscious versus unconscious mind, but he certainly was responsible for making it popular. The conscious mind is what you are aware of at any particular moment, your present perceptions, memories, thoughts, fantasies, feelings, what have you. Working closely with the conscious mind is what Freud called the preconscious, what we might today call "available memory:" anything that can easily be made conscious, the memories you are not at the moment thinking about but can readily bring to mind. Now no-one has a problem with these two layers of mind. But Freud suggested that these are the smallest parts! Freud created a sense of super ego where you internalize the parental standards, ideas, and prohibitions. Since Erikson had no parents to identify with his sense of standards were nonexistent. He had a feeling of inferiority in rel... ...p; Obviously, everyone suffers from inferiority in one form or another. For example, Adler began his theoretical work considering organ inferiority, that is, the fact that each of us has weaker, as well as stronger, parts of our anatomy or physiology. Some of us are born with heart murmurs, or develop heart problems early in life; Some have weak lungs, or kidneys, or early liver problems; Some of us stutter or lisp; Some have diabetes, or asthma, or polio; Some have weak eyes, or poor hearing, or a poor musculature; Some of us have innate tendencies to being heavy, others to being skinny; Some of us are retarded, some of us are deformed; Some of us are terribly tall or terribly short; And so on and so on. Both Erikson and Rogers possessed different qualities that can be attributed to other psychologists to evaluate themselves and their performance in the world of psychology. Each different theorist created a different contribution to psychology and neither one is right or wrong. It is up to each individual person to create their own image of what is right or wrong and what they want to teach in their lives and use in their every day life.

Recommendations to the Wallace Group Essay

Mr. Wallace, I have concluded my interviews with your team and have a list of recommendations based on priorities. The recommendations are unbiased and not intended to be personal attacks on the current management; they are based on the sound management principles and intended to maximize your company’s potential. a. Realign the corporate structure. Begin by recruiting a new board of directors using outside directors, â€Å"executives of other firms but are not employees of the board’s corporation†1, in addition to a limited number of management directors from inside the company. This combination of three companies working as independent entities is not working, they must be integrated and a different management organizational structure must be implemented. This group will be able to accomplish the next recommendation. b. Develop a mission statement and goals. The company must embark upon strategic management planning. This will include: †¢Clearer sense of strategic vision for the firm †¢Sharper focus on what is strategically important Improved understanding of a rapidly changing environment1 The Wallace group lacks vision and goals for its divisions and this leads to a lack of direction for the management team. A mission statement â€Å"defines the fundamental, unique purpose that sets a company apart from other firms of its type and identifies the scope of the company’s operations in terms of products offered and markets served†1. This business must develop a corporate wide strategic management plan to set a direction for the company and its shareholders. A part of this management planning would consist of SWOT analysis, strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation. This process is often referred to as Plan – Do – Act – Check or PDAC and is a continuous process. Making a profit today is not enough; there has to be an evaluation of where the company is now, where will it be in 2, 5, & 10 years and how the company will attain those goals. c. Change the organizational chart: There needs to be an in-depth evaluation of the personnel currently in place. The current chart is one of vertical structure and should be revamped to be more horizontal. This accomplishes the goals of empowerment and coordination between the divisions. A glaring problem is the VP of the chemical division, J. Luskics, as he was the former owner that guided the company into foreclosure and appears to not be running the division efficiently now. The chemical division is not even internally competitive for the plastics or electronics divisions. Mr. Luskics should either be bought out of the company or reassigned to a position that he might be successful. There also is a redundancy among positions in the company, for example there are three directors of industrial relations, these positions should either be combined or incentivized to cooperate in the best interest of the company. d. Personnel development. There is no apparent leadership development in place and the company has relied on promoting technical staff to management positions which many are not equipped to handle. There needs to be a leadership development series initiated, leadership retreats to communicate and encourage relations amongst the teams, and perhaps some Management Assessment of Proficiency (MAP) testing to asses the current management team. Management development and succession planning must be implemented to ensure long term success. Job responsibilities need to be developed and implemented for all positions but specifically for the management team; including specific goals, budgeting, forecasting (long range planning), training, and staff satisfaction. . Communication. The lack of clear strategies, long term plans, goals and objectives has led to the recent revolt at the stockholders meeting. This is a clear indication of the frustration felt from the staff level up and the new direction of the company must be clearly communicated to all staff. Enthusiasm is contagious and the presentation of a new course for the company will be very exciting for staff. Employee surveys, sugges tion boxes and an engaging of the front line staff will do much to improve morale and spark improvements. I would like to commend you sir for creating a successful company but I do believe there are concrete steps that you can take to improve the future of this company. Mr. Wallace I believe the development of a vision will produce great results, with this vision you will attract personnel that want to be a part of a great company and profits for all involved will naturally follow. Remember â€Å"Visionary companies make some of their best moves by experimentation, trial and error, opportunism, and – quite literally – accident†2. I estimate that this plan of action will initially cost $1. 5 million but there will be cost savings realized in personnel reassignments, recruitment and retention, productivity, and a renewed sense of commitment that will be reflected in profits far surpassing the costs.
